marketcoop (1)Founded in January 2013, the Market Cooperative is a flourishing community of artists and musicians in Montreal. Their vision? To spur a cultural change in consumption by promoting the local economy. The Cooperative not only highlights Montreal’s thriving cultural scene, but creates opportunities to showcase small businesses. The Markets, held four times a year at McGill’s downtown campus, host over 80 small businesses and artists, at least three dozen musicians, and often hundreds of people. It is not uncommon to find a wide diversity of products and services – you might find handicrafts, zines, clothing, photography, artwork, and delicious local cuisine. A key element of the Market Cooperative is creating meaningful relationships between McGill students and local artists. Members of the Cooperative believe that student participation in the community’s economy is the best way to promote economic, social and environmental sustainability.

The Market Cooperative is also an official non-profit organization in the province of Quebec. You can learn more about them on Facebook and on their website!
