To open the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal’s 85th season, composer Matthew Ricketts (BMus ’09) has been commissioned to write a new chamber opera. To celebrate this exciting opportunity, we asked Ricketts a few questions in a recent email exchange.

On August 19, the eastern flank of Mount Royal will become an outdoor amphitheatre for “Montréal Symphonique” It’s a free performance of major artists and Montréal’s three great orchestras – the McGill Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and the Orchestre Métropolitain, under the direction of Simon Leclerc.

At only 35, McGill music grad Jean-Willy Kunz gets to play one of the most interesting musical instruments in Montreal – the massive Casavant Frères pipe organ that juts out from the front wall of Maison Symphonique, where Kunz is organist-in-residence with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal.
