Public wants more funding for university research


As Parliamentarians return to Ottawa, recent findings from an Abacus Data survey show that their constituents believe university research is vital for Canada to become a global leader in innovation, sustain local economies, and tackle the most pressing challenges of our time – issues like climate change, income inequality, infectious disease and human migration.

Heading down the Road to 200


The Road to 200 is a new initiative that will explore how, as the University approaches its 200th birthday in 2021, McGill is pioneering new knowledge across five cross-disciplinary themes: Towards a Sustainable Future, The Promise of Better Health, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Humanity Beyond Boundaries, and Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives.

Having assumed the role on June 13, Angelique Mannella is tasked not only with overseeing McGill’s innovation agenda, she herself will be innovating.

While some might associate innovation with startups and get-rich-quick ideas, McGill’s working definition encompasses any academic discovery or insight that can be applied to the benefit of a broader population. Often this means partnering with industry, NGOs, social-purpose organizations, or other external parties to facilitate the delivery of a new idea to the public.

Montreal becomes hub for “simnovation”


More than 100 of the world’s most brilliant thinkers, representing a diverse cross-section of disciplines gathered at the Omni hotel in Montreal on May 5-6, 2016 to take part in the inaugural Simnovate International Summit. The Summit encouraged participants to immerse themselves in the spirit of breaking conventions and developing new directions for health care by temporarily leaving their day jobs behind and becoming “simnovaters.”
