For the sixth consecutive year, McGill has been named one of Montreal’s Top Employers, as selected by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers. In addition to the University, this year’s list of 30 Montreal institutions again includes the McGill University Health Centre and the Jewish General Hospital.

When it comes to McGill, evaluators noted that employees working on campus can take advantage of a variety of onsite amenities including an employee lounge, cafeteria (with healthy and special diet menus) and subsidized membership to the University’s fully-equipped athletics centre, which includes instructor-led classes, swimming pool, an all-season field house, skating arena and a sports medicine clinic.

As well, new employees receive three weeks of paid vacation allowance after one year and receive paid time off during the summer months. McGill helps employees prepare for the future with retirement planning assistance and a defined contribution pension plan.

The University supports employees who are new parents with maternity and parental leave top-up payments (to 95 per cent of salary for 20 weeks) and offers an option to extend their leave into an unpaid leave of absence, while providing parental top-up to adoption parents (to 100 per cent of salary for 10 weeks).

McGill’s Sustainability Projects Fund, which helps promote sustainability on campus, was noted, along with a number of other sustainability initiatives.

“We are very pleased to be recognized for the culture we have developed at McGill in terms of providing, despite continuing financial constraints, a good and productive working environment,” said Michael Di Grappa, McGill’s Vice-Principal of Administration and Finance. “The fact that we have continued to be included on this list for so many years running indicates to me that we have the fundamentals right when it comes to ensuring our employees feel good about the work they do and the people with whom they do it,” he said.

“We are proud to rank among Montreal’s Top Employers for the sixth consecutive year,” said Lynne B. Gervais, Associate Vice-Principal (Human Resources).  “While we are in the middle of a challenging period in terms of staff shrinkage through attrition and retirements, and are engaging all our employees to find innovative ways to improve efficiency and process review, we are still able to maintain generous benefits package and our health and wellbeing program, which help employees achieve balance in their work and personal lives.”

Now heading into its 10th year, Montreal’s Top Employers is an annual competition that recognizes the Montreal-area employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. The criteria used during the selection process focuses on physical workplace; work atmosphere; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.

Employers are compared with other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.
