Provost Anthony C. Masi has been named Acting Principal for the summer interregnum between the departure of Principal Heather Munroe-Blum and the arrival of Principal-elect Suzanne Fortier.

The Board of Governors made the decision at its April 26 meeting.

Masi has served as Provost since 2005. As such, he is the chief academic officer after the Principal and the University’s chief budget officer, overseeing the strategies, planning, development, implementation, and assessment of all academic priorities, policies and programs. Previously, he was the University’s Chief Information Officer from 2000 to 2005, Vice-Principal (Information Systems and Technologies) and Deputy Provost, and has been a professor in the Department of Sociology since 1979 where he formed and directed the Faculty of Arts Computer Services and served as Associate Dean.

“I am honoured to serve as Acting Principal of McGill,” Masi said. “This is a complicated time for the University, and I will continue Principal and Vice-Chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum’s efforts to ensure that McGill emerges from the challenges we face as a community.

“I also look forward to helping Principal-elect Suzanne Fortier as she prepares to assume the leadership of our great University.”

In a statement to the McGill community, Board Chair Kip Cobbett said Masi has served McGill with distinction and his “experience and abilities make him ideally suited to take on these responsibilities and I want to thank him for doing so. Please join me in wishing him all the best during his tenure as Acting Principal.”

Munroe-Blum departs on June 30, but, in order to fulfill obligations arising out of her former role as President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Fortier cannot take up her duties until Sept. 5.
