Melissa Knock, accomplished McGill alumna (Dip.Mgt.’98, B.Mus.’95), dedicated volunteer with the McGill Society of Montreal and former staff member who spent 24 years working in increasingly responsible administrative roles at the Faculty of Medicine (10 years), University Advancement (3 years), and the Faculty of Law (11 years), died on July 17, 2019, at age 52, after a short battle with ocular melanoma.

We are pleased to announce the extension of Professor Chen Liang as Interim Director of the McGill AIDS Centre, until June 30, 2020. Reporting to the Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean, Faculty of Medicine, as Interim Director of the MAC, Professor Liang will continue to lead the efforts to launch the Mark Wainberg Centre for Viral Diseases, a new McGill Initiative in honour of Dr. Wainberg. We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Donald Sheppard to the position of Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University. As Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Dr. Sheppard will build on the department’s successes in emerging areas such as pathogen virulence mechanisms, microbiome, and innate immune responses and help generate new knowledge in understanding pathogenesis resulting from infection and immunological processes, with the aim of ultimately translating these into novel treatments, diagnostic tools and vaccines to improve human health locally and globally.

Dr. Frederick Andermann, one of Canada’s most distinguished neurologists, passed away quietly on June 16, 2019 in Montreal at the age of 88.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Frederick Andermann Clinical and Research Fellowship in Epileptology and EEG at McGill University (514-398-2529) to continue his legacy of training epilepsy specialists worldwide.
