On September 29, close to 300 students from the four Faculties of Medicine in Quebec and from the University of Ottawa were united for a day of workshops and talks on topics ranging from Indigenous health to health of gender minorities, all whilst exploring rural family medicine and maternal and prenatal care. Dr. Guillaume Charbonneau, president of the College of Family Physicians, was the keynote speaker for this event.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Family Medicine Student Symposium reminds us of the important need for more primary care practitioners and the increased interest from the new generation of health care professionals in the making.

Benjamin Franklin reportedly said, “If you want something done, give it to a busy person.”  Cyril Boulila is busy getting things done.  The second year McGill medical student works part-time as a physiotherapist, is a member of the McGill water polo team, is an award-winning saxophonist and, as if that is not enough, is developing and organizing a series of free collaborative and interprofessional workshops.

They may be Montreal high school students, international medical residents, or students at any level in between. Their summer research experience could help develop a software prototype, a tool for vision research, or a computational method to locate neurons in the brain. As the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) says au revoir to another large cohort of summer students and volunteers, it’s clear that the benefits are on both sides—for the hosts as well as trainees who came to conduct a hands-on project in a leading research laboratory.

The McGill MDCM and DMD Class of 2022 kicked-off their studies recently with a three-day Orientation Session.  The students’ enthusiasm was palpable as they filled New Residence Hall for an official welcome from Dr. David Eidelman, Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean of Medicine, Dr. Elham Emami, Dean of Dentistry and Dr. Beth-Ann Cummings, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, among others.

A student-run non-profit that works to foster the student voice in science policy and evidence-informed policy-making in Canada, last year the « Science & Policy Exchange” proposed to include a panel at the 2017 Canadian Science Policy Conference on how to improve science communication. Now, a group of McGill Faculty of Medicine students from the group – Tina Gruosso, Vanessa Sung, Shawn McGuirk, Marie Franquin and Mary-Rose Bradley-Gill have published a report on Medium, highlighting 10 key recommendations to take away from the panel.

From June 26 to 28, a group of 50 students – 42 from local high schools and eight from rural areas – gathered at McGill University’s downtown campus for three days of immersion in health science-related educational workshops as part of the 2018 “Explore! Careers in Health” program.  Now in its tenth year, the annual youth outreach program is a Faculty of Medicine initiative to educate and empower students of communities that have been historically underrepresented within the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry to pursue careers in the health sciences.
