I would like to update you on the progress made with respect to the actions I outlined last week to address disturbing allegations of anti-Semitism surrounding votes taken at the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) General Assembly on October 23. I have appointed retired Professor of Education and former Ombudsperson for Students, Dr. Spencer Boudreau, to conduct an investigation into the events of October. 23. I believe it advisable to appoint someone to lead this investigation who is familiar with the McGill context. As a former Ombudsperson, Dr. Boudreau is also accustomed to working in a role that requires impartiality and independence.

A message from Principal and Vice-Chancellor Suzanne Fortier: On Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, the Students’ Society of McGill University, to which undergraduate students on the downtown campus belong, held a General Assembly attended by fewer than 300 students. At that meeting, three members of the SSMU Board of Directors were voted off the Board. Allegations have arisen suggesting that the votes against one or more of those Directors were motivated by anti-Semitism.

The Faculty of Medicine was saddened to learn about the tragic recent passing of Dr. Shreyas Roy, a member of the McGill MDCM Class of 2010. Our condolences go out to Dr. Roy’s family and friends.

From June 12th to 23rd, McGill was a hub of learning in the fight against infectious diseases as it hosted the 3rd installment of the Summer Institute. The short courses featured internationally known faculty and brought together approximately 400 participants from 53 countries.
