« Over the past month second-year medical student Olivia Monton’s leadership, philanthropic and volunteering acumen have been recognized with her being selected for four different awards.  She was awarded the Senate of Canada 150 Medal by the Honourable Judith Seidman. On April 17, she was one of the 42 recipients at Rideau Hall in Ottawa to receive the Governor General of Canada’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, recognizing the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields and paying tribute to the dedication and exemplary commitment of volunteers. McGill’s Family Medicine Graduate Student Society (FMGSS) was recently recognized by the Post Graduate Student Society (PGSS) of McGill University awarded both the Post Graduate Student Association of the Year Award and the Best Academic Event Award. The awards were presented during the 2018 PGSS Awards Night on April 12, an event that aims to recognize students, student groups and student-run events that have proven themselves to be outstanding within PGSS. The awards were presented by Dean Josephine Nalbantoglu of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. For their achievements, the FMGSS will be engraved on a plaque at the entrance of Thomson House.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Public Health, the School compiled a list of their 75 most influential alumni. Included among the impressive list of luminaries was Dr. Madhukar Pai, Director of McGill Global Health Programs. On April 21, Dr. Pai traveled to Berkeley to formally accept this honour as part of the official celebrations. Congratulations Dr. Pai!

The Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) recently presented the 2018 CAR Gold Medal Award to Dr. Lawrence Stein, Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Stein is recognized as a leader by his peers by virtue of his long and successful career in academia, teaching, and his outstanding contributions to the advancement of radiology as a specialty. Congratulations Dr. Stein!

Recently, McGill held its seventh annual 3-Minute Thesis/ Ma thèse en 180 secondes competition in which graduate students deliver concise presentations of their research in three minutes or less. This year, 14 participants captivated the audience with their research and their polished presentation skills.

Dr. Fackson Mwale, a Professor in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Surgery has been selected to serve as a member of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering Study Section, Center for Scientific Review for a six-year term beginning July 1. Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honours.
