RI-MUHC scientist takes HIV self-testing global with HIVSmart!™

It is estimated that 30-40 per cent of people living with HIV do not know their HIV status, which can have a serious effect on the spread of the disease. One of the approaches developed to change this statistic, especially among populations at higher risk for infection and who lack access to care, is the development of HIV self-testing, which provides people with a HIV diagnostic test that they can use in private. Now, this screening strategy is getting a global push thanks to a major new partnership with The International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC).

Child abuse affects brain wiring

Researchers from the McGill Group for Suicide Studies, based at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute and McGill University’s Department of Psychiatry, have just published research in the American Journal of Psychiatry that suggests that the long-lasting effects of traumatic childhood experiences, like severe abuse, may be due to an impaired structure and functioning of cells in the anterior cingulate cortex. This is a part of the brain which plays an important role in the regulation of emotions and mood.

Michel Tremblay awarded RSC’s McLaughlin Medal

Earlier today, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced that Professor Michel L. Tremblay (Department of Biochemistry and Goodman Cancer Research Centre) has been awarded the McLaughlin Medal for important research of sustained excellence in medical science. Recognized for his leading-edge work on the role and function of tyrosine phosphatases in the development of cancer, Professor Tremblay is among the twelve Canadian researchers honoured with an RSC medal or award this year.

Student-developed exhibit promotes diversity in science

Beginning October 10, a new interactive exhibit will be presented at the Redpath Museum with the goal of sharing the journeys of women and visible minorities from within the McGill scientific community, including highlighting some of the challenges they have faced. This permanent exhibition is the first initiative of Diversity in STEMM @ McGill, a group founded by Charles Cong Xu, a PhD student in biology from McGill University, and is meant to promote diversity in all its forms in science, technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM).
