In Memoriam: Klaus Minde (1933 – 2016)

It is with great sadness that we regret to announce the sudden death of Dr. Klaus Minde, due to a massive stroke, on July 6, 2016. Dr. Minde was one of the early members of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at McGill University and in that role, helped establish it as one of the first and leading Child Psychiatry Departments in Canada and North America.

McGill innovation among six selected by Grand Challenges Canada to scale-up to improve global health

A mobile phone app that enables self-diagnosis of HIV/AIDS whose development was led by Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at McGill University, is among six Canadian innovations showing evidence of early promise for improving global health that will “transition-to-scale” thanks to new support from Grand Challenges Canada, funded by the Government of Canada.

Dr. Mayada Elsabbagh from McGill University in Canada, and Dr. Mark Johnson, from Birkbeck, University of London, suggest that recent studies do not support the idea of a singular pathway in the development of autism.

Understanding bone death

Scientists at the Research Institute of McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) have discovered a new genetic mutation linked to osteonecrosis of the hip, specifically the femoral head – the spherical-shaped mass at the top of the femur. This breakthrough could allow doctors to identify and treat the disease before symptoms arise and potentially avoid hip replacements.

McGill resident wins McGill MedStar Award

Dr. Asim Makhdom, who recently completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at McGill, was selected for the McGill MedStar award, recognizing excellence in research completed by undergraduate, graduate students and residents at the Faculty of Medicine. The winning paper was titled “The potential roles of nanobiomaterials in distraction osteogenesis” published in the journal Nanomedicine and completed under the supervision of Dr. Reggie Hamdy, Professor in Experimental Surgery at McGill. Congratulations Dr. Makhdom!

McGill students hold camp that allows high school students to explore health sciences

Approximately 37 students from area high schools were welcomed to the downtown campus of McGill University for the 2016 edition of the “Explore! Careers in Health” camp, held this year from June 27-29. The annual event, which began in 2009 as a one-day event, is organized by students and residents representing McGill University’s Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, and is aimed at motivated and academically strong students with a goal to encourage students to pursue post-secondary education and to inspire and cultivate their interest in health professions.
