Dr. Donald Boudreau appointed Interim Director of the Institute of Health Sciences Education

Live 2020

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Donald Boudreau as Interim Director of the Institute of Health Sciences Education (IHSE), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill University. Dr. Boudreau has been a Faculty Member at the IHSE and its predecessor, the Centre for Medical Education, for more than 15 years. We take this opportunity to thank Dr. Yvonne Steinert who has led the Centre/Institute since 2005, during which time the academic unit has flourished. Two notable accomplishments under Dr. Steinert’s tenure as Director have been the transition to an Institute governance structure, thus facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to research and scholarship, and the creation of graduate programs. Thanks to Dr. Steinert’s leadership, the Institute is well positioned to sustain its tradition of excellence and to become a leader on the international stage.

Dr. Boudreau earned a BSc from Mount Allison University. Following that, he obtained his medical degree from Dalhousie University, then served as Chief Resident in Respirology at McGill. He is an Associate Professor in the Faculty and an Arnold. P. Gold Foundation Professor of Medicine. He recently retired as a respirologist from the McGill University Health Centre.

Dr. Boudreau has been involved in medical education throughout his career, having served as Associate Dean, Medical Education and Student Affairs, from 1997 to 2004 and again in 2015. He worked with the Faculty to create the Physicianship component of the current MDCM curriculum and has been involved in the student mentorship program and courses focused on teaching the clinical method. In 2019, the J. Donald Boudreau Physicianship Award was created and named in his honour to recognize a current or recent Osler Fellow who consistently demonstrates excellent mentoring qualities and the attributes promoted by the Physician Apprenticeship Program.

Dr. Boudreau has co-authored over 50 articles and book chapters, and in 2018, published a textbook, with Abraham Fuks and Eric Cassell, titled Physicianship and the Rebirth of Medical Education.

The IHSE brings together clinicians, educators, researchers and students from across the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences to create strong links between academic research, clinical practice, curricular design and educational policy development. As Interim Director, Dr. Boudreau will lead strategic planning of the Institute and guide its mission to serve as a resource for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing health sciences education. His responsibilities will include overseeing the on-going development of graduate training programs and promoting innovation in teaching and learning. In addition, he will participate in the Education Leadership Council, the Faculty Leadership Council, and act as advisor to the Dean on academic matters pertaining to the Institute.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Boudreau to this new role and in wishing him every success.
