Chronic pain management: New graduate certificate introduced

Live 2012

Online program for health care professionals launches in fall 2012

Chronic pain management is a major and growing challenge for our global healthcare system, and training healthcare professionals to effectively care for those suffering from chronic pain is a central element in tackling that challenge. McGill University, a world-class leader in pain research and treatment, has recently announced a new online graduate-certificate program for healthcare professionals designed to enhance their ability to assess and treat chronic pain conditions.

The new interdisciplinary certificate, created in collaboration with the internationally recognized Alan Edwards Center for Research on Pain, will provide healthcare professionals with the most recent approaches and technologies for the care and management of individuals experiencing chronic pain. Specialized clinicians, and pain experts from McGill’s School of Physical and Occupational Therapy and the Center for Research on Pain have created the course content.

Designed for busy professionals from medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacology, psychology, physical therapy, and related disciplines, most of the course content will be offered online. Thanks to the program’s “anywhere, anytime” design, students will acquire both theoretical and practical expertise in pain management ontheir own schedules at a lower cost per credit than equivalent programs in the health sector.

The complexity of chronic pain management requires that each core course is interdisciplinary by design. Through the use of tutors and students from a variety of backgrounds who interact through online forums, students will have the opportunity to compare experiences and work with others to solve real clinical problems.

Courses will begin in September 2012 with limited enrolment and may be taken in English or French.
