The Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor –

A 30 year Odyssey

M. Anthony Pogrel, DDS, MD

Professor & Chair, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

University of CA in San Francisco

The keratocystic odontogenic tumour (soon to revert back to its previous name of Odontogenic Keratocyst) is a benign, but locally aggresive, cystic lesion with a known recurrence rate of 40-60% after local enucleation.  This talk will discuss the aetiology, histopathogenesis and management of this lesion, including our experience and success rate over the last 30 years with Cryotherapy, Marsupialisation, Carnoy’s Solution and Decompression with Peripheral Ostectomy.  We will also discuss possible treatment with newly synthesised inhibitors of the sonic hedgehog pathway, and also 5FU paste.
