10th Annual Faculty of Dentistry Research Day

The 10th Annual Faculty of Dentistry Research Day will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2015 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Evo – La Plaza (formerly Holiday Inn) at 420 Sherbrooke West, Montreal, QC, H3A 1B4.

All graduate students and postdocs are invited to submit an abstract to Research Day using the online submission form found here. The deadline to submit an abstract is Sunday, March 15, 2015.

The keynote address this year will be given at 13.00 by Dr. Sam Harper (Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Occupational Health, McGill University) who will give a talk entitled: “Cross-national perspectives on oral health inequalities: recent evidence from Australia, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, and the United States”.

The day will be dedicated to poster and oral presentations from research trainees, graduate students, postdocs, research assistants and associates supervised by our Faculty.

Oral and poster presentations can cover the following areas:
1) Oral Health and Society / Clinical and Epidemiological Research
2) Mineralized tissue biology
3) Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering
4) Pain and Neuroscience

As usual, we will have an oral program that is formed from submitted abstracts, and presenters will compete for prizes for best oral presentations (1st $500, 2nd $300, 3rd $200) for the top three posters (1st $300, 2nd $200, 3rd $100) presented at extended lunchtime poster session. Quality of the submitted written abstracts may be taken into consideration for the poster prize. All competitions are for MSc and PhD students only.

In addition, two Knowledge Translation (KT) poster prizes (each $200) will be given. The two awards will be given by the two Divisions, each following criteria for the awards. CIHR defines knowledge translation as “a dynamic and iterative process that includes synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically-sound application of knowledge to improve the health of Canadians, provide more effective health services and products and strengthen the health care system”. The CIHR distinguishes two types of KT:
a) end of grant KT, in which “the researcher develops and implements a plan for making knowledge users aware of the knowledge that was gained during a project”;
b) integrated KT, in which “stakeholders or potential research knowledge users are engaged in the entire research process”.

1) Division of Biomedical Sciences: Biomedical Science KT award will be given to a student that best describes the potential of their research to a ‘Knowledge Translation panel’. This panel should be separate from the actual poster, and easily located on the board. Panel should be 8 x 11 inches in size and contain a maximum of 100 words. When creating this panel, think what new knowledge you have provided that allows your results to be used to develop novel products, and therapeutics that may help patients and strengthen health care. The award winner will be chosen by the Division Director, Dr. Kaartinen.

2) Division of Oral Health and Society: Oral Health and Society KT award will be given to the student from the division who best demonstrates the potential of his/her research in knowledge translation. We invite students to clearly explain in their poster how they will conduct (or have conducted) KT (the students who are using a previous poster could simply add a small board on KT). The award winner will be chosen by a researcher (TBA) from the Division.

You will be notified at later date, whether your abstract will be presented as an oral presentation or a poster, and at that time you will be given further instructions as to how to prepare your presentation. Please note that even if you choose a poster presentation you may be invited to give an oral presentation or vice versa. Priority for orals will be given to trainees that have not presented in the oral program before. Detailed program will be available soon.
