Brush off the Business Cards: McGill SCS’s First Job Fair a Success

2016-2017 Issue 1

This spring, McGill’s School of Continuing Studies held its first job fair. The inaugural event saw over 300 attendees, 20 employers, 90 interviews, and 25 job offers.

The fair invited current students and alumni to network with hand-picked companies. Maia Korotkina, Manager, Career Advising & Transition Services, oversaw the coordination of the event. “Having spoken with the company representatives after the job fair, I was delighted to learn they found so much value in recruiting from the School’s students. They highlighted how well prepared, sharp and articulate they were, and how pertinent were their qualifications” she said. “We are excited to leverage their experience to attract even more organizations to participate in the future and partner with the School.”

Many alumni and 2017 graduates saw the job fair as an opportunity to “pound the pavement” and hand out résumés to companies they were interested in. Current students found a lot of value in the networking opportunity since they showcased their diverse set of skills that will impress potential employers.

Phylicia Burke, an alumnus of the School of Continuing Studies Graduate Diploma in Business Management, had a very positive experience at the job fair. After receiving an email about the job fair, she thought it would be a nice opportunity. “I went with my CV’s and no expectations,” she said. “All in all – [the fair was] really well done. One of the best, if not the best, job fairs I’ve been to and I’ve been to many,” Burke added. “In fact, many concrete opportunities have arisen from the fair.” At the time of the interview, Burke was preparing for a meeting with connections she made at the fair.
