Yesterday, the Board of Governors approved the appointment of Professor Brenda Ravenscroft as Dean of the Schulich School of Music. She has been a member of the Queen’s University music faculty since 1993.

Cundill Prize short list announced

Today, the jury for the Cundill Prize in Historical Literature, the world’s most lucrative award for historical non-fiction writing, announced this year’s short list. The winning author, to be announced on Nov. 17, will take home $75,000 (US).

Over $10 million in SSHRC funding to support McGill research

The Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada recently announced the recipients of its latest round of Insight, Insight Development, and Partnership Grants, which include 70 projects led by McGill researchers. In total, 157 McGill-affiliated researchers will be supported by these grants.

Longtime McGill supporter and alumnus Graham Sommer, M.D., C.M.’72, has pledged $1 million to the university to fund a Canada-wide competition for young composers, providing an exciting forum for the creation of new musical works. The competition will be launched in 2017 to coincide with Canada’s 150th and Montreal’s 375th anniversary celebrations.

A new federal investment in a Canada-wide network of brain imaging centres will help turn a sea of detailed genetic data, high-resolution brain imaging and psychological interviews into new treatments for brain diseases and mental disorders.

Ferring Canada donates $2 million to University

Earlier today, Ferring Canada, a subsidiary of Ferring Pharmaceuticals, announced it is donating $2 million to McGill to be used to create fellowships in health and health leadership, and to finance environmental research in the Canadian Arctic.
