McGill grads win Canada’s Volunteer Awards

A group of inspiring citizens was honoured on Dec. 5, in a ceremony in Ottawa in which the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, handed out the 2017 Canada’s Volunteer Awards (CVA). A pair of McGill alumni, Valérie Toupin-Dubé and Lauren Rathmell, were among the recipients.

Two McGillians have been selected as Schwarzman Scholars, a one-year Masters’ program in Global Affairs. Grad Jordan-Nicolas Matte and soon-to-be-alum Jonathan Lopez Naranjo will join an elite cohort of international scholars at Beijing’s Tsinghua University in August 2018.

McGill grad named to Supreme Court

McGill Law graduate Sheilah Martin (BCL81/LLB81) has been named by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (BA94) to replace retiring Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin on the Supreme Court of Canada. Trudeau will name a new Chief Justice next month, his office said. McLachlin is to retire Dec. 15.

Three McGill professors awarded Senate of Canada 150 medals

McGill professors Alan Evans, Andrea C. LeBlanc and Bernard J. Lapointe were awarded Senate of Canada 150 medals for their commitment to advancements in Alzheimer’s disease and palliative care research.

Xue Liu and Justine Behan honoured by Mitacs

Anthony Ricciardi wins Frank Rigler Award

Anthony Ricciardi, professor of Invasion Ecology and Aquatic Ecosystems, has been named the recipient of the 2018 Frank Rigler Award, the highest honour given by the Society of Canadian Limnologists.

Desautels ranked among world’s top green MBA programs

Corporate Knights, which bills itself as “the magazine for clean capitalism,” has issued its 2017 Top 40 Better World MBA ranking that lists the business schools that most effectively integrate sustainability into the education of future business leaders. McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management was ranked ninth in the world. As well, the magazine named four McGillians to its list of Top 30 Under 30 leaders in sustainability.
