Mayor honours Redmen hockey champs at City Hall
The Redmen hockey team was feted at Montreal City Hall, Wednesday, May 16. The Redmen, who captured their first-ever national championship in March, were received by Mayor Gérald Tremblay and became the third sports team from McGill to sign the city’s Golden Book, an honour reserved for special guests and dignitaries.
Previous McGill teams to receive that honour include the 1987 Vanier Cup champion football Redmen and the 1982 national champion soccer Redmen.
The team, which just completed its 136th season, posted a 32-12-1 record overall in 2011-2012. They won their 17th Queen’s Cup title as champions of the OUA conference, then defeated the Western Mustangs 4-3 in overtime to claim the elusive University Cup as CIS champions in Fredericton on March 25. Team captain Evan Vossen, playing in his school record 216th and final career contest, tallied the winning marker at 6:00 of the sudden-death period.
