International Masters for Health Leadership: Transforming the way health care is managed around the world

IMHL Discussion

Leadership in the health field involves transforming people, organizations, and systems. The International Masters for Health Leadership (IMHL) at McGill is a collaborative program that draws on Desautels Faculty of Management Professor Henry Mintzberg’s innovative approach to management education and on the Faculty of Medicine’s pool of expertise in health care. It is designed to expose key players in health to leading edge practices in management.

Participants come from all over the world and hold positions of responsibility in health care.  Most have a clinical background (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists) and some have other backgrounds (economists, lawyers, managers, etc.).

IMHL participants find that the program enhances their daily practice and makes their use of resources more effective. Many have taken on greater responsibilities in their organizations, either by assuming more senior management roles, by taking on more significant projects, or by exerting a broader influence on the health system at national and international levels. Last year, Medicine alumna Dr. Joanne Liu, an emergency pediatrics physician and recent IMHL graduate, was elected President of the International Council of Doctors Without Borders—a high pressure position in which she regularly applies IMHL learnings.

The IMHL program is presently welcoming applications for the next class scheduled to start in April 2015. For questions, please contact Dorothee Schreiber.
