(English) In Memoriam: Dr. James D. Baxter (1923 – 2017)

(English) We regret to report the passing of Dr. James D. Baxter, former Chair of McGill’s Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, at age 93 with his loving family by his side, on Monday, March 13, 2017. Dr. Baxter led the department for more than 20 years from 1969-1990 with distinction and grace, ensuring it not only remained viable through some difficult times, but emerged stronger due to his leadership.

(English) In Memoriam: Dr. Sean Murphy (1924-2017)

(English) It is with much sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Sean Buller Murphy on March 16, 2017 in his sleep at the Chateau Westmount in Montreal. Dr. Murphy led the Department of Ophthalmology as chairman for many years, and training a large number of current faculty who carry on Dr. Murphy’s values and principles to the next generations of ophthalmologists.

(English) The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) is recognized worldwide for its research and clinical expertise in Parkinson’s disease (PD). PD is a motor neuron disease that is generally associated with old age, but people can also develop it in their thirties and forties. Characteristic symptoms include tremor, rigidity and gait dysfunction, mood and sleep disorders, and cognitive degeneration. About 100,000 Canadians have PD.

(English) Improving memory with magnets

(English) New research is shedding light on how sound memory works in the brain, and is even demonstrating a means to improve it. To learn precisely the relationship between theta waves and auditory memory, and to see how memory could be boosted, researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University gave seventeen individuals auditory memory tasks that required them to recognize a pattern of tones when it was reversed. This study was published in the journal Neuron on March 23, and was a result of collaboration between the Neuroimaging/Neuroinformatics and Cognition research groups of the MNI.

(English) UNMASK: McGill Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry students strut the runway to raise awareness of eating disorders

(English) Launched in 2012, the annual fashion show organized by and featuring McGill Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry students was held this year on March 25 at Montreal’s Entrepot Dominion. Current Med-P students Bianca Sarkis and David-Dan Nguyen led the organization of this year’s event supported by a six person executive committee. In addition to the 35 student models from among the Med/Dent-P and Med/Dent-1 cohorts, there were also five talent acts comprised of Med/Dent-P students that performed on the evening, which ultimately raised more than $8,000 for Anorexie et Boulimie Québec.
