Remembering Dr. Robert Kinch

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Robert Kinch, Professor Emeritus of McGill. Dr. Kinch’s long association with McGill began in 1968, when he was appointed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He later went on to become Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Montreal General and the Royal Victoria Hospitals. He will be best remembered at McGill for the remarkable legacy he has left in academic medicine.

Researchers uncover a new piece of the puzzle in the development of our nervous system

Researchers at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (IRCM) are among the many scientists around the world trying to unearth our nervous system’s countless mysteries. Dr. Artur Kania, Director of the IRCM’s Neural Circuit Development research unit and an associate member of the Department of Medicine (Division of Experimental Medicine), the Department of Biology, and the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University, and Dr. Tzu-Jen Kao, a postdoctoral fellow in his laboratory, recently uncovered a new piece of the puzzle.

Dr. Balfour Mount Awarded 2011 CMA Medal of Service

McGill biochemistry professor awarded grant from Parkinson Society of Canada

Dr. Kalle Gehring, a professor in McGill University’s Department of Biochemistry, has been awarded a Pilot Project Grant by the Parkinson Society of Canada (PSC) for his ongoing work that looks at the molecular and cellular processes that underlie neurological diseases like Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

No room for inaccuracy in the brain

Dr. Ruthazer is the winner of the inaugural Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Association for Neuroscience, which recognizes outstanding research achievements. His new study, published in the prestigious journal Neuron, vividly illustrates the effect of environmental inputs on the developing brain. “There is no room for inaccuracy in the mature brain,” says Dr. Ruthazer. “Our study shows that intense visual stimulation renders nerve cells more receptive to subsequent learning and refinement.” Read more ►
