McGill lauds research funding in latest federal budget

The first balanced budget in seven years, with a projected surplus of $1.4 billion in 2015-16, includes an investment of $1.33 billion spread out over six years, beginning in 2017-18, in research infrastructure. These funds are intended to help to train, attract and retain top researchers at Canadian universities.

Both the end and the start of an era were marked on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at the old and new sites of the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) of the MUHC. Royal Victoria Hospital transferred to Glen site

The eagle has landed. On Sunday, April 26, the McGill University Health Centre conducted the largest hospital move ever carried out in Canada, as 154 inpatients (139 adults and 15 babies) were safely transferred from the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) to the Glen site.

Quebec researchers and international collaborators identify a new breast cancer gene

A Quebec research team played a key role in an international study led by the University of Toronto and Pomeranian Medical University in Poland that identified a new breast cancer gene. The study, mamogramwhich was published online today in Nature Genetics, describes how mutations in a gene called RECQL are strongly linked to the onset of breast cancer in two populations of Polish and French-Canadian women. This discovery could have future implications in preventing the development of breast cancer in some families.

HPV vaccine shows early benefits in young girls

Data from Ontario show early benefits from the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in young girls, according to a new study by researchers at Queen’s University and McGill. The HPV vaccine, which protects against four types of HPV shown to cause cervical cancer and anogenital warts, is offered free through school-based programs to young girls across Canada. Despite the fact the vaccine is free, vaccine rates are lower than expected in a number of regions, in part because parents perceive their daughter’s level of sexual activity as low at young ages.

The importance of caring for your voice

Students from McGill’s School of Communication Sciences and Disorders (SCSD) organized a series of free voice screenings and workshops on April 1 and 2 that were held in McGill’s Education and Music buildings respectively as part of the lead up to World Voice Day. Cassandra Groot, Larissa Der, Susan Janzen and John Yotakis, four SCSD students, formed the World Voice Day organizing committee, working under the tutelage of SCSD Professor Nicole Li and with the generous support of Dr. Isabelle Cossette from McGill’s Schulich School of Music who made her lab and office space available for the screenings.
