When Dr. Nicole Li joined McGill’s School of Communication Sciences and Disorders (SCSD) in 2014, not only did she bring her unique research to the University, she also brought along a passion for raising awareness about the importance of caring for one’s voice.

It was under Dr. Li’s leadership that a multidisciplinary group of students and faculty members put together a series of events that marked the first McGill, and by extension the first Quebec, celebration of World Voice Day.

The events culminated in a seminar held in the evening of Friday, April 17 in the Schulich Music Building, that saw 94 people assemble for a varied and ambitious program that included updates on the latest in voice and music research (by Profs. Isabelle Cossette, Vincent Gracco, Nicole Li and Luc Mongeau), a panel discussion with McGill and the MUHC’s Dr. Karen Kost, speech pathologist Glenna Waters, their patient Corina Vincelli and music professor Stefano Algieri, as well as a demo of different singing styles by two music students.

“I’m truly impressed and very glad to see different groups of people from the community (teachers, musicians, singers, scientists, clinicians) who care about voice come together,” said Dr. Li about the event.  “That was precisely the purpose of this seminar – we wanted to break the walls that exist among different disciplines, bring them together and foster an environment where they can learn from each other. I think we did a pretty good job for this very first seminar and we already have ideas for next year. The success of this seminar is a result of a team effort — students, administrative staff and faculty from SCSD and CIRMMT as well as the expert panel. I can’t thank them enough for giving the general public such a beautiful event. I guess you can say we have had our voice heard.”
