Recognizing Outstanding Students

December 2017

Close to 220 people attended the reception, with the Faculty recognizing more than 125 outstanding Macdonald students at the 2017 Scholastic Awards Reception. Close to $400,000 in named scholarships at the undergraduate level and more than $450,000 at the graduate level were awarded. We were pleased to offer two new scholarships this year – the Bourse d’études Fondation JEFO for a student in agronomy; and the Kevin O’Neill Scholarship, established through a generous bequest from alumnus Kevin O’Neill, BScAgr’82.

“Creating a scholarship is a selfless and unequivocally generous act that should never go unnoticed. On behalf of all recipients here tonight, I’d like to note that these investments will be appreciated far beyond an ability to pay for tuition. The recognition itself that you did it, you’re doing something right, that you’re on some sort of ‘right path’ is cherished beyond belief. … Moreover though, as you are indeed investing in our educations, you are investing in our future, and the future.”  U3 Honours Bioresource Engineering student, Brandon Bonan, speaking on behalf of the awardees.

Sheila Greenspoon, BSc(HEc)’68, spoke on behalf of donors; she referenced the class of 1968 and how important it is for them to give back as a class, marking their anniversaries with special initiatives, and how much she enjoys attending the reception every year to meet these outstanding students.
