Giving the Gift of a Lifetime

December 2013

Bequests and other planned gifts have always been critical to the well-being of the University and its students. Such gifts were instrumental in the establishment of both McGill and Macdonald, and they continue to give the University the flexibility in planning to meet the demands of an ever-increasing student population and an ever-changing world. A planned gift is a charitable donation arranged during a donor’s lifetime but not available to McGill until sometime in the future.

Richard-BaxterIt was chance that brought Richard Baxter, BScAgr’74, to Macdonald. Late in applying to the university he wanted, he followed a friend’s suggestion and applied to Mac, thinking that he could switch after a year. Two years into the program and he could not imagine studying anywhere else!

Richard Baxter was at Macdonald when the Faculty was starting to place more emphasis on environmental issues, studying in the precursor to the Environmental Sciences program. He developed a lot of respect for his professors and the contributions that they made to environmental sciences. Part of the Class of ’73, Richard started working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, then in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, spending his first three years in James Bay. He completed his one missing course while on the job, and graduated in 1974. After an illustrious career in Fisheries and Oceans, Richard became involved in environmental impact assessment for hydro, pipeline and mining projects all over the world, in particular their impact on fisheries.

“I owe a great deal to Macdonald,” says Richard. “It enriched my life academically, and living and studying in a multi-cultural setting was wonderful. It was a great place to study. I am now in a position to give something back to the Institution that helped me establish my career.”

“It was important to me to make my bequest undesignated,” he continues. “That way, it can go towards the faculty priorities that will have an immediate impact and benefit to students.“

Have you been inspired by stories of alumni and friends who have made a planned gift to McGill? What will your legacy be…just imagine the possibilities.
