Dr. Marie Dagenais, former Associate Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry, has been selected to be the next Executive Director and Registrar for the National Dental Examining Board of Canada. After having conducted a thorough search the NDEB made the announcement on May 5, 2017. “I am very pleased the board is putting their trust in me,” exclaims Dr. Dagenais.

In her new position Dr. Dagenais will play a very important role in the leadership of dentistry across Canada. She will wear two different hats in her role, one as Executive Director and the other as Registrar. As Executive Director, she will provide leadership to all aspects of NDEB operations and as Registrar, she will be responsible for the ongoing enhancement, development and maintenance of national standards and accreditation, and examination processes. “I am excited to take on my new responsibilities,” says Dr. Dagenais. “I plan on continuing to do what the NDEB does very well, offer valid and reliable exams and ensure that all of our applicants have been properly trained.”

Dr. Dagenais contributes her current success in organised dentistry to her beginnings with the Faculty and the experience she acquired during her nearly 30 years at McGill. In 1988 shortly after she joined the Faculty, she was chosen by then Dean, Dr. Ralph Barolet, to be the Faculty Representative for the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry. She seized this opportunity and thus began her involvement in dental education and organised dentistry. “I became involved in organised dentistry by chance when I first began with the Faculty. This opportunity allowed me to forge many relationships with other organisations and even led me to my first introduction to the NDEB writing exam content. The Faculty afforded me many opportunities that I may not have had otherwise,” says Dr. Dagenais. She went on to become the Associate Dean Academic Affairs from 2000 – 2013, the President of the ACFD in 2005 – 2006 and the President of the Canadian Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology from 2008 – 2011, among other appointments she has held.

The NDEB is responsible for establishing and maintaining a national standard of competence of dentists in Canada. Created in 1952 by an Act of Parliament, the NDEB has three major areas of evaluation, accredited programs, non-accredited programs and non-accredited specialty programs. Dr. Dagenais will be the innovative thought-leader responsible for maintaining the quality of these evaluations and fostering the development of her team, the board of directors and future Canadian dentists.

Congratulations to Dr. Dagenais on this wonderful achievement!
