Dr. Ralph Barolet

The McGill Faculty of Dentistry is saddened to announce the loss of Dr. Ralph Barolet, former Dean of the Faculty, who passed away at the age of 85 on March 22, 2015 in Montreal.

Ralph enjoyed a long and distinguished career in dentistry. He earned a BSc from Loyola College in 1952 followed by a BEng from McGill in 1954. He decided to switch careers and earned a DDS in 1970 from l’Université de Montréal and continued on to complete his MSD in Dental Materials and Operative Dentistry from Indiana University in 1972.

Dr. Barolet became a Professor of Dental Materials at Université Laval in 1972 and stayed until 1987 when he was appointed as Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at McGill. He served as Dean of the Faculty from 1987 to 1994, and was central to the efforts in saving the Faculty from closure in the early ‘90s. He retired from dental education after 23 years of service in 1995.

Ralph was inducted as an Academy of Dentistry International Fellow in 1987 and in 1988 was named Treasurer of the Canadian Section. Ralph sat on the Executive Committee of the ADI from 1995 until he retired in 2010. Ralph was also very involved with the Quebec section of the American College of Dentists for many years as a member of the Executive Committee and historian.

Ralph was born in Montreal in 1929 and was described as a ‘man of the world’. An avid traveler, Ralph and his wife visited more than 75 countries.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine, daughter Frances and grandchildren Natasha, Julie Anne and Alexander.

We extend our thoughts to Ralph’s widow Lorraine and the rest of his family and friends.

The family will receive condolences Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Centre Funeraire Cote-des-Neiges. A Liturgy of the Word will follow at 5 p.m. in the chapel.
