“It was Easy to Find What Interested Me”

KristinaRamsayKristina Ramsay is a big fan of McGill University. Not only is she an Alumni Relations Associate with McGill Advancement, she’s simultaneously working towards a Certificate in Public Relations and Communications Management from McGill’s School of Continuing Studies.

“The program has been very rewarding,” says Ramsay. “I love engaging with like-minded students, discussing current affairs and increasing my network.”

Kristina earned a Bachelor of Social Sciences from the University of Ottawa in 2003 and returned to her hometown of Montreal to start her career. She’s been at McGill for just over three years now, but had been considering continuing education courses for a while.

“Going back to school was always at the back of my mind. I thought it was a great opportunity to do a refresher course and use my brain in that way, but also just for fun.”

Her job involves frequently coordinating communication and events with McGill’s regional alumni offices, so she thought public relations would be a good fit. “The website made it easy to find what interested me. I was hoping to find a PR program, and the fact that it was combined was even better; other universities didn’t offer that course so I was happy to find it.”

Ramsay enrolled in Fall 2012, and since then she’s been taking one class per semester. “The program’s flexibility has allowed me to take courses around my work schedule, which has been a great added benefit. I had no real deadline, and because I didn’t put pressure on myself I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve already improved my writing skills and public speaking skills, as well as networking with others in my industry.”

The ultimate goal, however, is completing her certificate; she has four courses left. “To have recognition from one of the top-notch universities in Canada, and in the world – I’ve already received positive feedback. It’s a big accomplishment.”

As a result, she’s considering additional courses – possibly in international business – and would recommend McGill SCS to others. “It shows that you’re always wanting to continue your education, and that you’re open to the possibility of more learning. And you get a lot back in return; I’ve never been more excited to go and apply what I’ve learned to my every day work.”
